Aquascot
A fish processing unit capturing accurate yield data
Aquascot is an employee-owned business dedicated to supplying fish to Waitrose, Ocado and companies that supply Waitrose.
The Aquascot story began in 1987. The business was built on high-quality food farmed in the sea.
By 2000 an integrated organization had developed with fresh and saltwater farms, processing plants and an international customer base.
The company was sold to a large multi-national feed and farming business.
In 2003 dedicated individuals regained the Aquascot name and the processing plant in Alness, near Inverness.
In 2008 Aquascot embarked on a journey to become an employee-owned.

What Aquascot Say
"We are unanimous in our view that Emydex is our preferred vendor. We are confident that your software can do most (if not all) of what we need, and crucially, we feel that Emydex the company is a good fit for Aquascot. We are well aware that we are not just purchasing software, we are committing to a long term relationship, and we came out of the meeting convinced that the two companies can work well together. Inevitably, we will discover things about the software that don't quite meet our needs, but you gave us confidence that you'd be willing to accommodate that, and discuss the best way forward for both parties"
Chris Hadley, Project Manager, Aquascot

Find Out MoreCanadian Fishing Company
A fully-integrated, sustainable fishery products organisation
The Canadian Fishing Company (Canfisco) has sustainably harvested wild fish from the coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest for over 110 years. The company operates the largest fishing fleet in British Columbia, over 850 vessels, that every year lands over 100 million pounds of mostly salmon, herring, rockfish, halibut and hake. Landed fish is supplied to the company’s nine processing plants located on the pacific coast in Richmond, Prince Rupert, Greater Vancouver, and Alaska.

What Canfisco Says
"Emydex spoke our language, much more than Microsoft… they understood our industry and our business. The (Emydex) system is friendlier, easier to use, intuitive and when the warehouse guys saw it they gave us their blessing so the decision to run with it was a no-brainer in the end. It has replaced very old legacy systems that weren’t integrated and left us very exposed to risk. The result is a solution that’s much more efficient and customisable so that we can add functionality as people have requested it.
The Emydex team were great – very responsive and easy to work with, despite the time difference… very professional and they really know their business. I’m looking forward to Emydex expanding further into our other processes, cold storage, our warehouses and beyond"
Mark Cornell, Senior Vice President
Challenge
Canfisco has grown both organically and through acquisition. As each new acquisition was moved into the Delta Pacific Seafood location, the software and processes were not consolidated into a single integrated process or software application. This left Canfisco with six different major applications and many Excel applications to compensate for the different systems at work throughout the group.
“Company acquisitions had left us with a patchwork quilt of components and old systems that were handling all of our processing.”
John Capling, Project Manager, Canfisco
However, the greatest risk to the business came from the out-of-date applications running on an over 25-year old Unix platform with limited hardware support. This environment left a very disjointed operation that only worked due to the efforts of staff acting as the glue to keep everything working together. Before Emydex came on board, Canfisco had at least five BOM process, four box labelling process and three separate financial applications in place in the organization.
Solution
Canfisco needed a new IT system that could provide a single source of the truth for the organization, providing improved visibility and measurement throughout the business, streamlining administration and, ultimately, improving the performance of the company.
The consensus within the various departments and plants was that any new software solution should be able to replicate what they were already doing, process-wise, i.e. it should keep the good things that worked well and with which everyone was familiar. To this, we should add some magic in the form of some low-hanging savings improvements, whilst at the same time providing the foundation for a software system that can grow into a more advanced solution over time.
Outcome
Key to the success of this project was to ensure it would be a gentle evolution and not a revolution. Keeping staff at all levels throughout the operation happy was very important and Emydex was careful to tread lightly. The most obvious improvement has been the elimination of the major risk of running the business on antiquated unsupported Data General (DG) Unix equipment. While there are a few minor applications still on the Unix platform, the team is working to quickly migrate them in the next phase.
Phase one has been completed but already administration efficiency has improved, as expected, thanks to reduced duplication of entry into multi applications and processes. Time consuming consolidation has been reduced and as other fish species are migrated to the new system in upcoming phases, staff will see all of the improvements fall into place.
There is now better traceability of fish from catch, through processing, to the end sale. Operational performance has improved too due to reporting on giveaway and production yields (with a potential of 2% improvement in raw material utilization) and, of course, Emydex has provided the foundation to build the operational performance measurements over time.
Interestingly, most of the implementation was done remotely which saved costs for the client and also worked out perfectly as the Covid-19 pandemic struck right in the middle of the project and had little effect on our timelines.

Find Out MoreNolan’s Quality Seafoods
A fish processing unit capturing accurate yield data
Nolan’s Quality Seafoods was established in 1912 by Harry Joseph Nolan. He worked as a part-time fish salesman in the Belfast Fish Market when he decided to use his knowledge and experience to set up on his own.
That choice led to the growth of a business that covers three generations, having passed to Vincent Nolan and then to his son in turn George Nolan, their present chairman. Today, Harry Joseph Nolan’s idea has resulted in a successful family business which employs almost 300 people in Ireland and Scotland with a turnover of over €30 million.
Their expertise and time honoured tradition can be experienced whenever one tastes their Smoked Salmon products. As Master Smokers they produce Conventional Smoked Salmon, Organic Smoked Salmon, as well as Wild Smoked Salmon in a wide range of pack sizes and formats.
They also produce: Gravad Lax, Smoked Mackerel, SmokedKippers, Smoked Haddock, Smoked Cod, High quality Prawn Cocktails and Added value Poached Salmon products.
As fresh fish merchants, they offer Cod, Hake, Plaice, Whiting, Haddock and Mackerel, as well as a large range of fresh and frozen shellfish, prawns, crab meat and lobster.
Nolan’s Dublin processing unit and Smokers are located less than 800 metres from the River Liffey, through which Salmon and Trout swim on their migratory routes to their traditional spawning grounds.
Here, Emydex helps Nolan’s Quality Seafoods to capture accurate yield data; weight-on versus weight-off, as well as production throughput; time-on versus time-off, from each of the company’s filleters in real-time. This information is stored in a central cloud-hosted Emydex database, which can be viewed by both operators on the line, as well as production supervisors on an industrial monitor running Emydex in the factory.

What Nolan's Say
“The ability to export accurate information instantly from the Emydex system has greatly improved the process by which the filleters are paid. Before, the production supervisor would have to manually calculate each filleter’s weights and rate of pay. This information is now exported and sent directly to our accounts department.“
Sean Carolan, IT Manager, Nolan's Quality Seafoods

Meliomar Inc. is a Tuna processing and Export Company based in Manila, Philippines. It is a commercial partner of the Artsemar programme for fisheries improvement, which is run by Blueyou Consulting based in Switzerland.
Meliomar approached Emydex with a view of implementing an electronic data capture production reporting system to replace their manual system. They were also looking for a comprehensive Traceability system to replace their manual paper based system for traceability recording and reporting.
Emydex implemented their Warehouse Management and Packing & Processing software modules along with Nice Labels for label design, to cover Procurement, Reception, Manufacturing, Packing, Order Picking and Dispatch. Meliomar now has a comprehensive Factory Floor Production & Traceability system from door to door.

What Meliomar Says
“Trust in the system is fast growing... The teams see how much less work they have to do compared to the manual system and now appreciate the system. We are quite happy with the new system and I want to thank Emydex for the dedication and intensive work on customising and implementing our system over the last year.”
